Get to know ESB, a motivating environment where children can learn English from native English-speaking teachers, successfully prepare for the language exams that await them in the future, or even prepare for university entrance exams abroad or locally.

English School of Budapest (ESB)

English School of Budapest (ESB) is a small British school that believes in student-centred learning based on innovative teaching methods. We have been teaching children English since 2010, transforming them into confident English speakers with our varied and enjoyable courses. In addition to acquiring the English language, our students gain a wide range of other knowledge and experiences. All this has a positive effect on their studies, their academic endeavours, their world view, and their vision for the future.

Starting in 2025 we will be introducing a course aimed especially at secondary school students called Find my Direction. We will be providing students with a wealth of valuable and practical knowledge regarding the application process at foreign universities and will guide them through the entire admissions process.

Plan precisely, decide with confidence!

Secondary school years are all about finding a path. Students have to get to know their own strengths, they must discover what they are truly interested in. The Find my Direction Compass Program is intended to show students the possible directions and specialties, so they can make good and grounded decisions in their final years of secondary school.

UNIVERSITY PREP COURSE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Our Values

Along with English knowledge we provide students with self-confidence.

Our goal is for students to reach a high level of English knowledge on a solid foundation. We aim for them to be able to use the wide-ranging knowledge and skills they gain with us in their academic studies, both at the primary and secondary school levels

Student-centered skills-based learning.

Our teaching is based on the Cambridge curriculum, but it does not focus on textbook teaching. Instead, it is built around the development of core skills such as writing, reading, speaking and critical and creative thinking.

Global viewpoint.

The curriculum is designed around international themes that motivate our students to think open-mindedly about the world and reflect on current topics and events.

Community and togetherness.

We provide a friendly and accepting environment where children and families can feel at home and accepted. ESB is a real community where lifelong friendships are born.

Direction in career planning.

One of the challenges of adolescence is realizing which university program to choose, in your home country or abroad. At ESB we are determined to guide students in this period as well, to help students make informed decisions, and stand by them during the admissions process.

Personal development and self-growth.

Our school offers many opportunities for children outside of lessons, such as extracurricular activities and summer camps, to try new things and discover new interests.

Are you preparing for a language exam?

The motor of our school, and the reason for our success is our ESB teaching team. Get to know them a little better!

Marcel Fanara

Lead Teacher, Head of Communications

I am from Brookeville, Maryland. As a child, I often watched my mother teach English to international students, which not only sparked my interest in teaching but also allowed me to learn about different cultures and countries at a young age.

I studied history, literature, and writing at Franklin University in Switzerland and Swansea University in Wales. Later, I obtained my CELTA qualification in Edinburgh, enabling me to share my passion for the English language with others.
Since then, I have taught English as a second language to international students and immigrants in the United States, as well as to Chinese high school students and Hungarian elementary school students. Amidst all the detours and twists and turns, it is my love of travel and meeting all kinds of people that drives me forward in my adventures.

Dave Long

Lead Teacher, Head of Curriculum

I spent my childhood in Japan until I was 13, so I know firsthand the challenges and benefits of learning a new language. When my family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, my love of languages and teaching inspired me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in English and literacy at Indiana Wesleyan University.

During my teaching career over the past seven years, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to teach a variety of subjects, including English, art, music, and physical education. Teaching has taken me to South Korea, China, and the United States. I believe that every student is unique, so I always tailor my lessons to their learning needs, using interactive activities, projects, storytelling, and visual aids to make learning as enjoyable as possible.
Outside the classroom, I find great joy in nature and music—I love hiking, camping, singing, and playing music. I arrived in Budapest with my wife, who supports me in this new and wonderful adventure

Lisa Gillespie

Educational Consultant

Canadian born, Lisa grew up in Perth, a small town in Ontario. Growing up she followed her three older sisters and joined the local swim team. Her dream was to be able to swim through university and this came true when she received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Nevada, in the United States of America. In 2012, Lisa graduated with a BSc in Education concentrating in general sciences. Not long after she travelled to London, England to pursue a career in teaching.

She soon realised that her passion is working with young learners so most of her experience is at the primary level, teaching the National Curriculum for England. In 2017, Lisa moved from England to Hungary to gain experience teaching in the international schools and fell in love with teaching foreign students. For two years she taught English as second language to young learners at the English School of Budapest and has experienced first hand the benefits and confidence that children have gained from taking part in ESB’s English program. In addition to finding joy in teaching children from different backgrounds and learning about their cultures, Lisa also enjoys leading a balanced lifestyle which includes family, friends, fitness and of course swimming too!

Brigitta Füzesi

Economics and Business

I’m an economist with over 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors – and one of my key goals is to share my passion for economics with the next generation.

I teach high school students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme in English, as well as university students at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Semmelweis University, where I lecture in economics, health economics, and nonprofit management.

Why economics?
Economics is behind every decision we make – from what we buy, to where we travel, and which career path we choose. Every choice has an economic consequence – even doing nothing at all.

My aim is to help you understand how the world works and to support you in making conscious, well-informed decisions in your own life.

This is for you if…

  • You’re not yet sure what path to take, but you’re curious about how the world works – this is a great opportunity to explore whether the world of economics and business could be right for you.
  • You’ve already decided to pursue economics, management, or business studies – then this is the perfect place to lay a strong foundation for your future.

What can you expect from me?
✓ Explanations rooted in real-world, current events
✓ Engaging discussions and collaborative thinking
✓ Project-based learning
✓ A supportive, open learning environment
✓ Knowledge you can actually use

Economics isn’t (just) math, and business isn’t (just) suits – with me, you’ll understand what really drives them.

Okos Tímea Kitti:
We lived in a Spanish-speaking country for a year, where our then 4-5 year old son picked upside English as well. We wanted to maintain and improve his English (and also nurture his enthusiasm for languages). We were worried that starting first grade having 4 lessons a week would be too much for a 6 year-old, but from the beginning he hasgone to the lessons with enthusiasm and joy. The best part of it all is that he doesn’t even consider it studying, rather an active, playful activity where they also speak only in English. Miss Marcell is not just professional, but also very very kind, always smiling, and her good mood is absolutely contagious. Our son always leaves the lessons in a cheerful mood, and it is a joy for us to speak to her as well and to see how she finds something to praise in every child, each day seeing what they did well. A positive approach to children is a given here. It is a great counterbalance to the more rigid and lecture-based school days and teaching, because here it’s not like at other schools where the children sit quietly at a desk listening to their teacher explain to them, and don’t dare to speak even after ten years, the focus not being on what the children know, but on what they don’t know… It’s good to see that language can be taught like this too, with the children having fun, playing, feeling good, becoming more confident and enthusiastic about learning and speaking the language. All 3 of our children go to ESB and I can only say good things about it! The teaching is professional, the teachers are kind, and the administration is outstanding! The results speak for themselves: our daughter passed her language exam without an issue at age 14 and is now studying at a English language secondary school. ESB made our sons love the English language. They are enthusiastic and are making great progress. Thank you 🙂
Gera Anita
Mr. Dave and the assistants were very kind to our children. They paid attention to them; in short they were child-centred. We were very satisfied with them and will be choosing them again next year.
