Introduction to Psychology
Start of course: 2nd October, Thursday
This is an exciting and experiential introduction to psychology. It can help you understand yourself, others, and how the world works. If you are interested in what happens inside our minds and why we decide as we do, join this course!
No prior knowledge required. It is an ideal choice if you are:
- Interested in human behavior and thought
- Planning to study psychology
- interested in better understanding yourself and others
What you will learn:
- What the science of psychology really is
- How psychological research works and how to interpret results
- Key psychological theories and their daily applications
- Improve observation and communication skills
- Gain self-understanding and empathy towards others
- Get a glimpse of university-level psychology training
Topics include:
- Introduction to psychology – Freud, Skinner, and the beginnings of psychology
- Developmental psychology – attachment and learning in childhood
- Behavioral psychology – reward and punishment, which is more effective?
- Biological psychology – brain, hormones, neurotransmitters
- Memory – why we forget? How reliable is our memory?
- Decision making – How do we think and what mistakes do we often make?
- Digital world – How does technology impact the mind?
- Emotions – Why are they important and what are their functions?
- Personality– What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Motivation – What makes us move forward?
- Abnormal behavior – What counts as “abnormal”?
- Mental disorders – depression, stress, personality disorders
- Therapies – How can we treat psychological problems?
- Social psychology – Why do we behave differently in groups?
- Relationships – Why do we fall in love with people? Why do we break up?
- Communication – How can we best understand each other?
